The short answer

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is not a filler and it is not an anti-wrinkle treatment. It sits in a third category: a bio-remodeller, which treats the quality of the skin rather than its shape or its movement.

It carries one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid available, and crucially that hyaluronic acid is not cross-linked. Cross-linking is what makes a filler hold its shape in one place; without it, Profhilo stays fluid and spreads through the tissue instead of staying put. As it disperses it releases hyaluronic acid gradually, and that signals the fibroblasts in the dermis and the keratinocytes in the epidermis to produce collagen and elastin.

The result is a change in skin tone, texture and elasticity rather than in volume. Faces that have gone dry, crepey and a bit dull start to look plumper and brighter without looking different. It is the treatment for skin that has lost quality rather than structure.

Profhilo can help to:

Rehydrate skin that has gone dry and dull

Hyaluronic acid released within the dermis holds water where topical products cannot reach, which is what changes the way skin catches the light.

Firm mild laxity without lifting anything

New collagen and elastin over the following weeks improve how the skin holds itself. It is a quality change, not a lift, and Dr Toro will say when a lift is what you actually need.

Smooth crinkling in the lower cheek and around the mouth

Fine crepey texture responds better to skin remodelling than to filler, which would simply push it out.

Treat neck lines and a lined décolletage

These are among the most requested areas, and among the ones people notice most, because skin there is thin and almost never protected from the sun.

Improve skin quality on the backs of the hands

For texture and hydration. Where the problem is lost volume rather than quality, Dr Toro will recommend filler or a skin booster instead.

Support the results of other treatments

Filler and threads sit in the skin you already have. Improving that skin first is often why a plan looks better than the sum of its parts.

Patient journey

What to expect from Profhilo

Consultation & preparation

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and aspirin or vitamin E for a week beforehand if you bruise easily. Come with clean skin and no makeup on the treatment area. If you have a history of cold sores, tell Dr Toro so preventative treatment can be arranged before a perioral session.

During treatment

Aftercare

Leave the treated area alone for at least 6 hours and keep makeup off it for 24 hours. Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours. Avoid facials, chemical peels, saunas, sunbeds and swimming for 2 weeks. Small bumps settle within hours; any swelling or bruising usually resolves in a day or two.

Profhilo questions

What is the difference between Profhilo and dermal filler?

Filler is cross-linked, so it stays where it is placed and adds volume or definition. Profhilo is not cross-linked, so it spreads through the tissue and changes skin quality instead: hydration, texture and firmness. If your concern is a flat cheek you want filler. If it is dull, crepey skin you want Profhilo.

How long does Profhilo last?

Six to nine months after the initial course of two to three treatments. A top-up at that point maintains the result rather than restarting it, and patients who keep to that schedule hold their skin quality year round. Individual results vary with age, skin type and sun exposure.

Does Profhilo hurt, and is there downtime?

It is well tolerated. Ten entry points across the face means fewer injections than most skin treatments. Expect small raised bumps at each point which usually settle within a few hours, and occasional swelling, bruising, redness or itching that resolves in a day or two. Most people go straight back to work.

Who is Profhilo suitable for?

Anyone with dry or dull skin, mild to moderate laxity, fine lines, acne scarring or sensitive skin, at any age and on any skin type or tone. It suits people who want better skin without changing their face. If you have significant sagging, Dr Toro will tell you that a thread lift or filler would serve you better.

Can I combine Profhilo with other treatments?

Yes, and it is frequently part of a plan. Anti-wrinkle treatment handles dynamic lines, filler handles volume, threads handle lift, and Profhilo improves the skin all three sit in. Dr Toro sequences them rather than doing everything at once, so each has room to settle before the next is judged.
