The short answer

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Every time you frown, squint or raise your brows, the muscles underneath fold the skin above them. Do that a few thousand times a day for a few decades and the fold stops disappearing: a dynamic line, visible only on movement, slowly becomes a static one that is there when your face is at rest.

Anti-wrinkle treatment interrupts that process. A prescription-only medicine, the one most people know as Botox, is placed into the specific muscles responsible for a line, reducing the signal between nerve and muscle so the muscle contracts less. The skin above gets a chance to settle. It is the same purified protein, used at medical doses, that has been given safely to adults and children for other conditions for many years.

Dr Toro treats conservatively on purpose. Movement is kept, expressions stay yours, and you are reviewed at two weeks when the effect has fully developed rather than being sent away and sold a top-up later.

Anti-wrinkle treatment can help to:

Soften the lines your expressions have left

Frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and the fan of lines at the outer eye all come from repeated movement. Reducing that movement gives the skin above a chance to recover.

Stop a line settling in before it does

A line treated while it still disappears at rest is easier to manage than one that has set. This is why some patients in their late twenties and thirties start early, at low doses.

Balance a face that moves unevenly

Most faces are asymmetric, and one side often pulls harder than the other. Treating the stronger side more than the weaker one evens out how the face moves rather than how it looks at rest.

Slim a jaw that has widened from grinding

The chewing muscles enlarge with years of clenching. Treating them softens the angle of the jaw and, at the same time, takes the force out of the grinding.

Relieve a medical symptom rather than a line

The same medicine is used for jaw and TMJ pain, hay fever, excessive sweating of the underarms, hands and feet, and some migraine presentations. Suitability is assessed individually.

Lift a heavy brow a little

Relaxing the muscles that pull the brow down lets the muscles that lift it win by a millimetre or two. It is a small change and it is the one people notice most.

What anti-wrinkle treatment is used for

The same prescription approach covers cosmetic and medical reasons for treatment. Follow any of these to read how Dr Toro treats it.

Patient journey

What to expect from anti-wrinkle treatment

Consultation & preparation

If you bruise easily, avoid aspirin and supplements such as vitamin E in the week before treatment, and avoid drinking heavily for 24 hours beforehand. Skip high-intensity exercise on the day. New patients have a face-to-face consultation and a prescription before treatment, which may not be on the same day.

During treatment

Aftercare

Stay upright for 4 hours and do not rub or massage the treated areas. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and facial treatments for 24 hours. Small raised marks settle within about 15 minutes; bruising is uncommon and arnica can help. The effect develops over about 2 weeks, when Dr Toro reviews you.

Anti-wrinkle treatment questions

Will I look frozen?

Not if the dose is right. Dr Toro works to a less-is-more standard: enough to soften the crease, not so much that your face stops moving. Some movement is left deliberately so your expressions stay yours. If you want a stronger or softer result, that is discussed before treatment and adjusted at your two-week review.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a brief pinch or sting at each point rather than pain. The needle is ultra-fine, the same type used for daily insulin injections, and the whole treatment is over in 10 to 15 minutes. Numbing is rarely necessary. Tell Dr Toro if you are anxious about needles and she will take it at your pace.

How long do the results last?

Typically 3 to 6 months. The exact duration depends on the area, how strong the muscle is, and how quickly your body breaks the medicine down. The effect fades gradually as movement returns rather than stopping suddenly, and whether to repeat it is your decision at that point, not an automatic booking.

Is this the same as Botox?

Botox is the best known brand of the prescription medicine used in anti-wrinkle treatment, and it is one of several licensed brands. Dr Toro selects the product for the area and the result you want. What matters far more than the brand is who is assessing your face, how the dose is chosen and whether you are reviewed afterwards.

What is medical anti-wrinkle treatment?

The same medicine used for a medical rather than a cosmetic reason. Dr Toro treats teeth grinding and TMJ pain, hay fever, excessive sweating of the underarms, hands and feet, and some migraine presentations with it. Suitability is assessed individually at consultation, and it is not appropriate for everyone.

What should I do before and after treatment?

If you bruise easily, avoid aspirin and supplements such as vitamin E for the week before, and skip heavy drinking for 24 hours. Afterwards, stay upright for 4 hours, do not rub the treated areas, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and facial treatments for 24 hours so the product stays where it was placed.
