Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers in Marylebone and St John’s Wood, London, placed by Dr Toro Ogundoyin: hyaluronic acid used to restore volume where the face has lost it and definition where it never had much, with as little product as the result allows.

The short answer

What are dermal fillers?

Faces lose volume in a predictable order. Fat pads that sat high in the cheek slip and thin, bone recedes at the eye socket and the jaw, and skin that used to be thick enough to hide all of it gets thinner. The result reads as tired or heavy long before it reads as old.

Dermal filler replaces what has gone. Think of it as a pillow plumping the skin from underneath: a gel, almost always hyaluronic acid, placed at the right depth to hold a structure back up. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your body already makes and already knows how to break down, and it can be dissolved if a result is not right, which is exactly why Dr Toro uses it.

She works with as little product as the result allows, mostly through a blunt cannula rather than a needle, which reduces bruising and means the filler goes in one plane rather than several. The aim is a face that looks rested, not a face that looks filled.

Dermal filler can help to:

Lift a mid-face that has flattened

Replacing volume high on the cheek supports everything below it. It is usually why the nasolabial folds and the mouth corners improve without being injected directly.

Soften the shadow under your eyes

A hollow tear trough throws a shadow no concealer fixes. Filler placed carefully in that groove reduces the hollow itself. Not every under-eye suits it, and Dr Toro will say so.

Sharpen a jawline or bring a chin forward

A defined jaw and a chin in proportion change a profile more than anything done to the face straight on, and the change is usually read as looking well rather than looking treated.

Straighten a nose without surgery

Filler can smooth a dorsal bump, lift a drooping tip and balance asymmetry. It adds rather than removes, so it suits some noses and not others.

Give lips shape rather than size

Hydration, a defined border and a cupid’s bow that reads clearly, with volume only where your own lip shape asks for it.

Rejuvenate hands that show age before the face does

Hands lose volume early and are almost never protected from the sun. Restoring a little of that volume makes tendons and veins less prominent.

Patient journey

What to expect from dermal filler treatment

Consultation & preparation

If you bruise easily, avoid aspirin and supplements such as vitamin E for the week before, and avoid drinking heavily for 24 hours. Skip high-intensity exercise on the day. Come without makeup on the area if you can, and tell Dr Toro about any previous filler, including where and when.

During treatment

Aftercare

You can return to normal activities immediately. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for at least 24 hours. If there is swelling, tenderness or bruising, use ice and sleep with your head raised; arnica helps with bruising. The result settles by about 2 weeks, when you are reviewed.

Dermal filler questions

Does dermal filler hurt?

Most people tolerate it well. Dr Toro mainly uses a blunt cannula rather than a needle, which is more comfortable and bruises less, and nearly all the fillers she uses contain a local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure as the product goes in. Tell her if anything is uncomfortable and she will add topical numbing.

Will I look like I have had something done?

That is the thing she works hardest to avoid. The standard is the least product that achieves the result, placed to support your own structure rather than to change it. Most patients report that people notice they look well rather than noticing the treatment, which is the intended outcome.

What is the downtime after dermal filler?

There is usually no meaningful downtime and most people go straight back to their day. Some swelling is normal in the first few days and is part of why the area looks fuller at first. Tenderness and occasional bruising settle within a few days; ice, sleeping with your head raised and arnica all help.

Can dermal filler be removed?

Yes, if it is hyaluronic acid based, which is what Dr Toro uses. An enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves it, usually within a day or two. That reversibility is a genuine safety feature: it is also the emergency treatment if filler ever presses on a blood vessel, which is rare but is planned for.

How long before I see the final result?

You see a change immediately, but the first week is a mix of product and swelling. The true result is at about 2 weeks, once the swelling has gone and the filler has integrated. That is when Dr Toro reviews you after a first treatment, and when any refinement is best judged.
