The short answer

What is prescription skincare?

There is a reason the same serum works miracles for a friend and does nothing for you. Skincare sold off a shelf has to be safe for everyone who might buy it, which caps what can go in it, and it has to be formulated for an average face rather than yours.

Prescription skincare starts from the opposite end. Dr Toro assesses your skin, what is actually happening in it and what you can tolerate, and then has a formula made for you at strengths that only a prescriber can issue. The ingredients are chosen for your diagnosis rather than for a category, and the concentration is set where your skin can use it rather than where it will react to it.

It is not a stronger version of a shop-bought cream. It is a medical treatment you happen to apply at home, and it is the part of a plan that carries on working on the days you are not in clinic.

Prescription skincare can help to:

Fade pigmentation properly

Pigmentation is the concern where prescription strength makes the biggest difference, because the over-the-counter versions of the useful ingredients are capped well below the level that changes anything.

Speed up cell renewal

Faster turnover improves texture, tone and congestion at the same time. It is also what makes the skin hold a peel or a needling result rather than drifting back.

Manage acne and the marks it leaves

Treating the active spots and the pigment they leave behind is two jobs, and a formula can be built to do both at once.

Protect against environmental damage

Antioxidants at a real concentration, chosen to work with sun protection rather than to replace it.

Hold the results of in-clinic treatment

Peels, needling and injectables improve skin on the day. Daily prescription skincare is what keeps that improvement between appointments.

Stop you buying the wrong things

Most people arrive with a shelf of half-used products working against each other. A short, deliberate routine usually outperforms all of it and costs less over a year.

Boundaries of practice

What's not treated

Good practice means saying no when indicated:

  • Pregnancy or planning pregnancy, and breastfeeding: several active ingredients are not used
  • Known allergy or previous reaction to an active ingredient in the formula
  • Active eczema, dermatitis, rosacea flare or broken skin in the treatment area
  • Current or recent oral acne medication, assessed individually
  • Immediately before or after a peel, laser or needling, until the skin has settled
  • Unwillingness to use daily sun protection, which makes a pigmentation plan ineffective

Patient journey

What to expect from prescription skincare

Consultation & preparation

Bring everything you currently use, or photograph the labels. Note what has irritated you in the past and what you actually apply every day rather than what you own. Come with clean skin and no makeup so your skin can be assessed as it is.

During treatment

Aftercare

Introduce the formula at the frequency Dr Toro sets and build up rather than starting nightly. Expect some dryness or light flaking in the first few weeks. Use daily broad-spectrum sun protection throughout. Report stinging, heavy peeling or persistent redness rather than pushing through it.

Quoted at consultation

A prescription formula is priced once it has been designed for you, because what goes into it depends on your assessment. Dr Toro also sells ready-made formulas through her own online store, which has its own pricing and ordering process.

Prescription skincare questions

How is this different from expensive skincare I can already buy?

Concentration and specificity. Retail products are capped at strengths safe for anyone who picks them up, and are formulated for an average face. A prescription formula is made at a strength only a prescriber can issue, with ingredients chosen for your diagnosis, which is why it needs an assessment first.

How long before I see a difference?

Expect a build-up period of two to four weeks while your skin adapts, often with some dryness or light flaking, and the first real changes between six and twelve weeks. Pigmentation is the slowest of all and is measured in months. Anything promising faster than that is selling you something.

Will it irritate my skin?

Some adjustment is expected and is not a reason to stop, but genuine irritation is. That is why Dr Toro starts most people at a lower frequency and builds up, and why you are reviewed rather than left with a bottle. Tell her if your skin is stinging, peeling heavily or going red.

Do I still need in-clinic treatment?

Not necessarily. For plenty of patients a well-chosen routine and daily sun protection is the whole plan, and Dr Toro will tell you when that is the case. Where in-clinic treatment is worth having, prescription skincare is what keeps the result between appointments rather than an addition to the bill.

Can I order online without coming in?

Dr Toro sells ready-made skincare formulas through her own online store, which has its own ordering and assessment process. A formula made specifically for your skin needs a consultation first, in clinic or online, because it is a prescription rather than a purchase.
